And Ballistic‘s new Tough Jacket case for the iPad 2 definitely fits the bill.

The Skinny

In Ballistic’s own words, the Tough Jacket is:

… protection you don’t have to think twice about. This case is three layers of the strongest protection on the market. An amazing feature in our Tough Jacket Series is Ballistic Corners™ – which means all four corners have extra shock absorption where you need it the most!

Also included with this amazing case, is a front cover attachment that will help protect the screen during travel. The cover can be removed and placed on the back of your case and used as a kickstand for your new iPad 2!

  • Advanced three layer protection
  • Layer 1 – Inner silicone layer absorbs shock
  • Layer 2 – Impact resistant hard plastic protects the iPad 2
  • Layer 3 – Shock Absorbent polymer layer
  • Thicker Ballistic Corners for drop protection
  • Removable cover that can also be used on the back as a kickstand
  • Lay-on-table feature (screen never touches the surface of the table when laid flat)

In Detail

Design & Construction

As with many of Ballistic’s cases, the design is bad-ass, military-inspired utilitarian (not sure that’s a documented design aesthetic, but you get the gist). It’s big and bulky with heavy duty rubberized corners, thick handles and a solid kickstand around back for Facetiming and long YouTube sessions of Justin Bieber videos.

All of that is a good thing for travelers. Frankly if you’re buying this style of a case, it’s because you value protection over looks. In short: we love it.

Pricing & Availability

Available now in black/black or black/red for less than $70 USD directly from Ballistic.

Bottom Line

As with any upscale piece of gear, particularly those for iDevices, we’re happy to pay a bit more for a well made product. At around $70, the Touch Jacket case is on the high side compared to what you’d pay for a “standard” iPad case. But we think the added protection and near bulletproof design are worth the extra cost.
