For travelers that can’t escape too far from home or love the winter chill, plenty of seasonal carnivals abound, stretching from Sapporo, Japan to Ottawa, Ontario.

Ever compete in a frying pan toss? The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival in Saranac Lake, New York has a toss competition just for women.

Canucks come out to the Bon Soo Winter Carnival in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and enjoy “bum slides” (literally sledding on your bum) on frozen tracks and an annual polar bear swim in Lake Superior.

If the thought of snow and ice games, ice cold swimming, and dog sledding are on your travel radar, you can find a full listing of the destinations here.
