One year ago today, Amanda Kendle explored the booming subculture of flashpackers. It’s a term Wikipedia currently defines as:

… a neologism used to refer to affluent backpacker. Whereas backpacking is traditionally associated with budget travel and destinations that are relatively cheap, flashpacking has an association of more disposable income while traveling and has been defined simply as backpacking with a bigger budget.

Perhaps a bit oversimplified, but you get the gist.

  1. I think flashpacking is just another sign of the increasing wealth and affluence in most societies. Even ‘poor students’ are traveling in style with their MacBook Pros and SLR cameras. It is cheaper than ever to travel the world.
