Starbucks is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of coffee giants taking over China (and the world for that matter…) The company has been very vocal about its plans to triple its current number of stores in China to 1,500 by 2015. But another company, Pacific Coffee is challenging Starbuck for the java market in the Middle Kingdom.

Pacific Coffee currently has only 18 shops in China but it hopes to expand to 50 by early 2012. The grand plan is to eventually have 1,000 Pacific Coffee outlets across China.

The company’s success, it says, is due to the fact that it has altered its menu to appeal to Chinese taste. How exactly? By adding coffee drinks spiked with booze.

Making an appearance on Pacific Coffee’s menu is the “Huadiao mocha”, which blends a Chinese yellow wine with a mocha blend, as well as the “Er Wotou chillino,” which is iced coffee mixed with Chinese Er Wotou liquor.

Time will only tell if the boozy brews will give Pacific Coffee an edge over Starbucks.
