I know whenever I check into a swanky hotel, I often think to myself, “What this situation needs is some prison food.” That may not be true, but nevertheless the chefs at the Eclipse restaurant at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco have taken inspiration from Alcatraz for their latest menu.

It is said that the food was pretty good at Alcatraz back in the day. Former prisoners — and let’s face it, those imprisoned there tended to be regular customers of various institutions in the penal system — gave the joint top marks in the food department.

For a limited time, you can fork out $28 for the prison-inspired menu that includes a starter of clam chowder; your choice of meatloaf, spaghetti, halibut, or braised short ribs as an entree; salad, green beens and mashed potatoes on the side; and banana bread pudding for dessert.
