Chicago Suburb Pimps Its Stop Signs

A Chicago suburb is trying to get drivers to pay attention to stop signs (those oft-missed, bright red, octagonal signs that spell out S-T-O-P … yes ”¦ those ones) by adding a touch of humor to them. Now, drivers who might otherwise ignore the signs as part of the shrubbery, have to at least smile when they read the sign, which might make them stop. Or at least, that’s the plan.

Signs include Stop ”¦ in the name of Love after the Supremes song, and Stop ”¦ and smell the roses. Cute idea, and one Mayor Dave Heilmann hopes will get people to notice. Heilmann himself is a former comedian, and the brainchild behind the wacky signs.

Not all residents have been quick to give the thumbs up to the new signs — one woman was quite disdainful as she called it a ”stupid” idea.
