The Ball drop in Times Square New York is probably the most famous ball drop in the US, but across the US, many cities host their own bizarre New Year’s drops. Unlike New York these cities are thinking outside the ball by dropping innovative and strange things to mark the coming of the New Year.
With help from NewYearsQuest (compiled by MapQuest) Huffington Post has put together a list of places around the US where you can go to celebrate 2012 by watching strange things being lowered from the sky.
In Mobile Alabama, MoonPies have traditionally been tossed off Mardi Gras floats and to mark this, on New Years the city drops a 12-foot electronic MoonPie from the top of the 34-story RSA Bank Trust Building in downtown. You can also get your MoonPie fix at a variety of free MoonPie Over Mobile festivities to celebrate Mobile’s heritage.
And What could possibly be cooler than the traditional ball drop in New York on New Year’s Eve? How about an illuminated 10-foot Gibson guitar dropping 120 feet? Every year, the Hard Rock Cafe and the city of Niagara Falls host a street festival that draws thousands to eat, drink and party the night away. The epic night is finished off with the New Year’s Eve Guitar Drop at the stroke of midnight.
