In the USA we have eggnog and hot chocolate (and the ubiquitous Starbuck “red” cups), but around the world the beverages that inevitably get spiked for the holiday season are incredibly varied. Over on Gadling, they have compiled a list of international Christmasey beverages.
In Europe””north, south, east and west,–they have warmed, sugared and spiced wine called mulled wine. In Norway it is called gløgg and it is made with cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and bitter orange. In In Bulgaria, greyano vino is made with honey, peppercorns, and sometimes, apple or citrus. Cheers!
In the Caribbean, the islands keep the holidays bright with rum-infused drinks. One drink, in Jamaica, called sorrel punch, is made from the petals of a species of hibiscus. The brew is sweetened and then smashed fresh ginger, water, lime juice, and rum are added to make the perfect beverage.
