To mark the 250th anniversary of the sandwich, the British town of Sandwich is staging a dramatic re-enactment of the moment when the town’s earl was said to have invented the bread-based meal.

Actors dressed in 18th-century costume will recreate the night when John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, who loved to play cards, “called for a slice of beef between two toasted pieces of bread so that he could carry on gaming uninterrupted”.

Town legend claims that others began asking for “the same as Sandwich” and thus the famous meal was born.

In addition to the re-enactment the English port town is also holding a sandwich-making competition and concerts of the bawdy and lively tunes favored by the earl. The current earl will also host a huge sandwich lunch in tribute to his predecessor.

Even though historians are skeptical of the town’s claim that the earl invented the sandwich and assert that the sandwich belongs to a long line of bread-based snacks, the town is going forward with their celebrations.
