Statue of Liberty to Reopen on Independence Day

One of New York’s most notable icons fell victim to Hurricane Sandy last year and has been shut down ever since. That is until July 4, when the Statue of Liberty will once again open to throngs of tourists.

Last November, Libety Island was hit with record flooding, railings were broken, and the storm destroyed boilers, sewage pumps, and electrical systems.

Post-hurricane, National Park Service crews from as far as California and Alaska helped with relief efforts. Damage was estimated at $59 million.
