Wednesday marked the hottest day on record in 140 years in Shanghai.

The city was welcomed with 105.4 degree heat in an already toasty summer. Shanghai is experiencing a long-running heat wave with 24 days of 95 degrees or higher in July.

So how are residents cooling off? Some are staying out of the pool because even that’s too hot. Streets are empty. Most are staying at home. And hospitals are being used to cool down.
