We know that the bird came from Japan because of the electronic tag on its leg. It was discovered at a military facility in Comox, British Columbia, Canada in a weakened state, leading to speculation that the racing pigeon flew all the way from Japan.

The pigeon spent the past two weeks recuperating at an animal rescue center in Courtenay and now has a new home with a local pigeon-racing enthusiast who has agreed to adopt the bird after its owner was contacted in Japan and declined to have it shipped back to him.

It’s still a mystery how and why the pigeon covered the vast distance between the two continents. Read more about this on CBC News

  1. They very well may have come across on merchant ships. I worked for APL on a container ship and we would get land birds from Japan onboard. Most didn’t make it, there being a lack of fresh water and food. One trip, we had 4 pigeons that were banded and very healthy. We fed them on the bridge wing and provided fresh water. They flew off when we got to Long Beach, Ca. It’s a 9 day trip coming from Yokohama, and it was plenty cold.
