Her royal highness is renting out rooms in St. James Palace for corporate and charity events to make a little extra cash during the during the London Olympics.
Historian David Starkey states that the opening the palace was perhaps inevitable,
“We are in an age where everything is up for sale so we should not be surprised when the Monarchy jumps on the bandwagon.”
But don’t expect a listing for the palace to show up on airbnb.com–royal officials are only inviting organisations that have an existing link with the Royal Household, including those who have Royal Warrants (a mark of reccognition for those who have provided goods and services to the queen for at least 5 years.)
Buckingham Palace defended the opening of the palace, stating:
“I think everyone is very conscious that purse strings are tight at the moment and this is an innovative way of raising funds,”
“All the monies raised will be able to supplement the Sovereign Grant and will be spent on the upkeep of Royal residences.”
