South African chef Albertus Buitenhuis and his wife have been residing in New Zealand since 2007 on visitor and work visas. Four years later, when the couple applied for New Zealand residency, they had to undergo a series of medical tests. Buitenhuis believes that with the results of the tests, his visa application was denied due to his obesity.
New Zealand immigration authorities disagreed and explained to Buitenhuis that his test results showed that “he did not have an acceptable standard of health…that his ability to work was in question and that there is potential ‘high cost’ of his healthcare.”
Buitenhuis and his wife are now considered illegal aliens and have been unable to work since May. They are currently awaiting news on an appeal with immigration. More details on the visa ordeal can be see at CNN.com.
