Solid State Drives (or SSD) have been slowly creeping into the lineup of many storage and media manufacturers. The benefits of SSD over traditional storage media are legion: lightning fast read/write times and a more stable architecture mean they can take much more of a beating (great for travelers).
All of which is why Iomega have released their latest line of SSD External Flash Drives with:
… write speeds up to twice as fast as 7200 RPM SATA hard drives, the new Iomega external SSD Flash Drive has maximum USB 3.0 transfer speeds for HD media. Cool to the touch and silent, it’s compact and super-rugged for mobile use.
Sweet!
Not so sweet: the price. You might want to open the wallet wide for this one: prices range from $230-$750, depending on the capacity.
Needless to say, it’s a step in the right direction and a sign of good things to come for flashpackers and travel photography enthusiasts. Our bet is to wait another year or so when we’ll likely see prices cut in half or more.
