New smartphone apps like “Where’s a Bear” and “Yellowstone Wildlife” are keeping track of animal sightings in Yellowstone and helping tourists pinpoint the best areas to find wildlife in the park.
Yellowstone officials said the apps could become a problem depending on their popularity.
Already the crowds that stop to gawk at wildlife along the roads in Yellowstone can grow to hundreds of people. And wildlife becoming too comfortable around humans is another concern since a grizzly habituated to people is even more dangerous than your average bear. Just last summer grizzly attacks killed two tourists.
Perhaps it’s a good thing that tourists won’t be able to access the apps in real-time, since the vast majority of Yellowstone doesn’t have cellphone coverage.
