The Baltic city of Tallinn, Estonia may become the first European capital to offer public transportation free-of-charge. Mayor Edgar Savisaar wants his city of 416,000 to be “the flagship of the green movement in Europe.”
Though it still remains unclear how the city will pay for the program, seventy-five percent of referendum voters supported the free rides program, which is slated to begin in 2013.
Unfortunately for visitors, public transport will only be free for locals. Tourists will still have to pay the €1.60 flat-fare.
