The people of Fruita, Colorado aren’t afraid to make a joke at their own expense. The town, popular with mountain bikers, has a sports shop that sells “FU” (“Fruita, USA”) decals and the town hosts an annual festival dedicated to a headless chicken named Mike.
But not everyone is laughing after a local couple drew international attention when they printed 500 “WTF” (“Welcome to Fruita”) stickers and distributed them free to downtown businesses. The huge success of the decals led the couple to print another 1,500 stickers and city officials were forced to pay attention.
After asking for public feedback on a official marketing campaign incorporating the double-entendre “WTF” city officials discovered that most citizens were not fans of the double entendre.
Even though the WTF campaign is not being officially picked up by the city, city manager Clint Kinney, predicts the business community will “pick it up and run with it” despite the lack of municipal support.
