Looking for a unique reminder of you last trans-atlantic flight? How about a piece of the plane? Hold on, now before you go ripping pieces of the airplane interior off during your next flight, the bits of planes that are actually up for grabs are being recycled from decommissioned airplanes.
Matt Mahler of Tierra Ideas in Raleigh, N.C. flies down to Delta’s Reclamation Center in Atlanta and brings home truckloads of blue wool blends, navy wool blends, and blue and grey leather, reclaimed from Delta’s old seat back covers and curtains. Tierra Ideas then transforms the decommissioned fabrics and leathers into business card holders, wallets, laptop covers and a wide variety of travel bags that sell for $15 to $175.
If you are looking for a bigger and more obvious chunk of an airplane look no further than MotoArt. MotoArt uses vintage and commercial airline parts to create large pieces of furniture. Cowlings become reception desks, rear stabilizers are transformed into executive desks and fuselage into office dividers. If you are looking for something a little subtler they also transform airplane windows frames into picture frames.
