For the budget traveler, Couchsurfing (and the like) is the bee’s knees, the cat’s pajamas, etc. But not so long ago, the only tried and true option was homestaying. One year ago today, Amanda Kendle explored this world of alternative accommodations:

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times: true traveling for me involves getting to know the local culture. And one of the best ways to do this is to stay with locals, and I don’t mean picking a locally-owned hotel brand. I’m talking about sleeping in the spare bedroom of an ordinary local person at your destination, and there are a few ways to do this — my favorite is finding a good homestay arrangement.
