A young New Zealand woman is the latest victim in one of the most recent incidents of methanol poisoning in Indonesia.
The backpacker consumed a cocktail made with Arrak (composed of coconut flower rice, sugarcane spirits and fruit juice) and most likely local moonshine mixed with methanol. She arrived home in New Zealand with impaired vision. After eventually visiting a hospital in Christchurch, she was treated for methanol poisoning. Her vision continued to deteriorate for a month, until she was left blind.
