A Delta flight from Asheville, North Carolina to New York made an emergency landing last week after the pilot got stuck in the airplane lavatory.
While the pilot was in the lavatory, the only flight attendant onboard the plane had to enter the cockpit (due to airline regulations). Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the crew, the pilot was stuck in the lavatory because of a broken door latch.
A passenger heard the noise of the pilot struggling to get out of the bathroom and when he was unable to open the door from the outside the pilot told him how to notify the crew of the situation. The well-meaning passenger approached the cockpit door–but unfortuantly his heavy accent spooked the first officer.
The first officer stated to air traffic control,
“The captain disappeared in the back, went to use the restroom. By all indications, what I’m being told is he’s stuck in the lav and someone with a thick foreign accent is giving me a password to access the cockpit and I’m not about to let him in.”
This incident is reason enough to wait until landing before visiting the bathroom.
