Seattle’s iconic Space Needle was built in time for the 1962 space-themed World’s Fair. The original color of the Needle’s roof, “Galaxy Gold” was short-lived, but last week marked the brief return of the color, just in time to commemorate the landmark’s 50th anniversary.
Before it was built, the head of the World’s Fair requested a lollipop-shaped tower. The Needle’s architect, Victor Steinbrueck wanted a more elegant design, and used a sculpture of a dancer with outstretched arms as inspiration.
The Needle has witnessed a number of changes and roof colors over the years, but if anything is for sure, it will continue to be admired for another 50 years. More on the Space Needle’s anniversary can be seen at NPR.org
