The eastern Indian state of Bihar recently held a ceremony to mark the start of construction on replica of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple. The 20 million dollar project is funded by the Hindu Mahavir Mandir Trust.
The trust’s secretary, Acharya Kishore Kunal, stated that the plan was to “recreate Angkor Wat’s grandeur and splendor.”
The Mahavir Mandir Trust intends the new temple to be the tallest Hindu temple in the world.
“It will be the world’s largest Hindu temple”¦ bigger in size, shape and height than the Angkor Wat of Cambodia,”
Kunal told the BBC.
When originally constructed in the 12th century the main temple of Angkor Wat was dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu but it was later used for Buddhist worship.
