Unless you’ve managed to avoid tv, internet and newspapers over the past couple of days, you’ve probably heard that the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday. And while all the award buzz may be about the actors, directors, writers and producers of the nominated movies, travelers may have noticed the inspiring locations that stole the scene in many of this year’s best films.
In “The Descendants”, the beautiful islands of Hawaii become a main character in the film.
“I remember watching the trailer for ”˜The Descendants’ and thinking, this is such a wonderful commercial for Hawaii,” Jason Clampet, senior online editor for Frommers, told FoxNews.com. “It goes a little beyond the beaten path and shows us the sites that locals know about.”
And Woody Allen brings the 1920s bohemian culture of the City of Lights to life in his romantic comedy,”Midnight in Paris.”
Cities and countries featured in this year’s best films can expect tourism numbers to jump. The director of the “The Descendants,” Alexander Payne, already knows how a movie can affect tourism. Pinot Noir sales jumped by 16 percent nationwide after his film “Sideways” won an Oscar. And both film and wine enthusiasts still travel to the Santa Ynez Valley — the region where “Sideways” was filmed — to check out the vineyards.
And lets not forget the “Lord of the Rings” Trilogy which has been called a “nine-hour advertisement for New Zealand.” Kiwi’s are hoping for another boost in “Tolkin Tourism” when “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first part of Peter Jackson’s prequel hits theaters this year.
