To Make Ends Meet, Greece Renting Out Ancient Mouments

In an attempt to save its ancient heritage, Greece is putting plans in motion to allow for the rental of its most iconic archaeological treasures to advertising firms and other business.

Previously, requests to use the Acropolis–Greece’s most popular site–for advertising have been refused, and very few filmakers have been allowed to shoot on the site. Any commercial activity taking place at ancient monuments is monitored and restricted by the Central Council of Archaeology.

The country’s culture ministry says the change in policy would raise much-needed money for the maintenance of sites.

Greece has been one of the European counties hardest hit by the recession, with unemployment at record highs and financial bailout from the EU and IMF in May 2010.
