The waterfront of Rio de Janeiro will soon have a green new addition. The Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow), designed by Santiago Calatrava is part of a 5 billion Brazilian real “Marvelous Port” project that will revitalize Rio’s waterfront district.
In addition to the Museum of Tomorrow, Recently discovered remains of a 19th-century wharf where slaves from Africa were held and sold will be preserved as part of the project.
The massive revitalization is attempting to be as “green” as possible. The museum will be surrounded by pools of recycled rainwater and five-and-a-half acres of gardens, the building will be powered by roof-top photovoltaic panels.
The museum is projected to be completed by 2012 when Rio will host the UN Earth Summit.
