As the largest and most heavily populated of the seven Canary Islands, Tenerife is a hub of both economy and tourism in this Spanish archipelago. With an exquisite blend of old world European charm and modern, cosmopolitan flair in the North, the ultra-developed South that caters to the needs of just about any visitor, and the annual Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife – one of the world’s largest carnival festivals – it’s no wonder that the island is visited by more than five million tourists every year.

It’s also no wonder that it features some of the freshest local fish dishes and the hippest, most extensive, and best dining options in the whole of Western Europe. Here, we offer our top five can’t-miss Tenerife restaurants:

#1: Restaurante Los Roques (Los Abrigos)

With a relaxed, intimate atmosphere, Restaurante Los Roques has been serving fantastic local and international dishes to culinary aficionados since 2005. The outstanding views of Los Abrigos harbour and the Tenerife coast make it a can’t-miss dining experience especially for travelers seeking a romantic night out. Tip: reserve a table on the 12-person terrace at sunset for a truly spectacular view!

#2: Restaurante Sebastian (Costa Adeje)

For an upscale, but still casual atmosphere, check out Restaurante Sebastian – a hidden treasure in an otherwise [ahem] touristy area. Frequented by tourists and locals alike, they promise reasonably priced, authentic Spanish cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere with a friendly, knowledgeable staff. Tip: Don’t miss their inspired warm tapas menu, including the duck-filled crepe in sweet and sour sauce and pear and parmesan ravioli in tomato, basil and buffalo mozzarella.

#3: Restaurante Las Velas (Los Cristianos)

With an extraordinarily friendly, professional staff and prime sea-view location on Playa de Los Cristianos, Restaurante Las Velas is another relatively hidden gem in Tenerife. The cocktail menu is extensive enough to suit even the most discerning traveler; while the food is cooked to perfection and lavishly presented. Tip: don’t miss the all-natural ice cream and frozen yogurt as well!

#4: Monte Christo (Adeje)

With warm lighting, soft fabrics, modish flatware, and fine glassware Monte Christo (no website) provides a gorgeous decor and unique, sophisticated atmosphere. The restaurant features lovingly hand-crafted Italian dishes that are truly second to none in Tenerife. The comprehensive wine menu is perhaps one of the best on the whole of the island. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic evening or special occasion night out. Tip: don’t miss the authentic and fantastic homemade desserts!

#5: Regulo (Puerto de la Cruz)

Perhaps the best restaurant in the area, Regulo (no website) provides a fantastic dining experience in a most unique setting inside an old repurposed home. With a delightful and courteous staff, amazing indoor patio, flawlessly prepared, authentic Spanish dishes, and (best of all) tremendous value, it’s no wonder that it’s a perennial favorite even amongst locals. Tip: beware the portion sizes and come hungry! The restaurant is well-known for massive helpings of just about everything on the menu.
