We recently had the pleasure of staying at New York’s shiny new Distrikt Hotel, part of the Choice Hotels Ascend Collection of unique hotels. It’s a cutting edge property with a variety of amenities geared towards the modern traveler.

In Detail
Freshly opened in February of 2010, the halls and rooms still smell new. Guests are greeted in the lobby with a huge, wrap-around wooden wall sculpture representing a map of the entire city, including Central Park.
Hotel floors are cleverly grouped into various city “districts”, with lower floors representing “downtown” and upper floors, Harlem and uptown. Distrikt notes:
New Yorkers are defined not just by the city they call home, but also by the neighborhoods in which they reside. These unique “districts” are worlds in and of themselves, and together they define an icon. The Distrikt Hotel New York City celebrates the individuality of these melting pots and the island of Manhattan itself through architecture, design, style and service.
Service
From Kyle, the attentive front desk manager, to the cleaning staff who routinely remembered which floor we were staying on, to the door men who always offered a courteous Hello and Good afternoon, the staff at Distrikt was accommodating, professional and friendly.
Location, Location ”¦ Location?
In Manhattan, one is rarely far from world class restaurants, theaters, bars, etc. Distrikt Hotel is no exception – centrally located in New York’s midtown, near Times Square, Central Park, scores of city landmarks, and 100s of other conveniences within a three block radius.
It’s an easy $6 cab ride from Penn Station if you’re arriving by train. Or just off the highway for east- or westbound guests arriving by car.
Guestrooms
Room decor is a balanced mix of corporate cool – think abundant glass and dark wood – with enough trendy designer touches to ensure guests feel comfortable.
Given that the hotel is so centrally located, one would expect to hear the usual array of constant city noise. Fortunately, hotel architects thought of this too. Each room features extra thick, soundproof windows – nearly 1” thick. It’s a nice touch and one we instantly appreciated our first night in bed.
Our large, King room afforded us with an insanely comfortable bed, oversized bathroom (far larger than you’d expect of any hotel in NYC), and comfortable workstation from which we blogged for the duration of our two-day stay.
An important note for modern vagabonds: the free wireless and wired internet was blazing fast and we never lost our connection. (And yes, I said free WiFi. Are you listening, other NYC hotels?)

With prices starting just north of $200/night, the hotel is well-suited to travelers seeking a little something extra without the exorbitant pricing typical of many NYC accommodations. Recommended.
