But Bracketron’s SmartLantern is a dead simple bit of kit that combines a backup battery with a flashlight/lantern into one compact package.
The Skinny
The SmartLantern is designed to be a “charger + lantern + flashlight combo unit perfect for outdoor recreation and emergency preparedness kits”. And, for our purposes, travel.
The full feature list includes:
- 48 hours of flashlight or lantern illumination or up to five full charges to your mobile device
- Lantern globe slides down to create a flashlight for more focused lighting
- Battery can store its charge for up to one year

The Traveler’s Take
Packing a backup battery is practically required for gearhead travelers these days. Most are fairly compact — about the size of a Snickers bar. So if you’re packing one already, it’s worth noting that the SmartLantern isn’t much bigger. But the added benefit here is, of course, the lantern bit.
What’s more: the pop-out functionality to convert the unit from flashlight to lantern (and back again) is cleverly designed to minimize the unit’s footprint.
What we really love about the SmartLantern — what sets it apart from other similar products — is the durability. With a housing that’s both impact- and fire-resistant, it’s built to withstand the rigors of long-term travel.
One minor gripe is the placement and small size of the power button. A smarter design would have been to incorporate the power “switch” in a more intuitive way. Perhaps squeezing the entire unit turns it on/off? This would be particularly useful for users fumbling for light in a pitch black hostel, tent, campground, etc.
Lastly, in a time where decent backup batteries can be had for around $30 USD, the MSRP (nearly $80) for the SmartLantern is rather steep. On the upside, the unit can be had for around $60 through various online outlets.
