Every year on the second Saturday of July, residents of Alice Springs, Australia gather for the Lasseters Camel Cup.
What makes the race unique (besides the fact that yes, it is a camel race) is the fact that camels are not indigenous animals to the country. The race began 43 years ago as a bet between two residents of the town who decided to settle a feud by racing one another on camels. Over the years, the race grew in popularity and now it has become a fundraiser for the Alice Springs Lions Club.
