The UK government is struggling to protect the integrity of one of its most famous exports — Scotch whisky.

Alarmed at the rising production of Scotch whisky in China and India – two countries with burgeoning markets for whisky – the government wants to develop laws that clearly define the origins of Scotch whisky as within the UK, thus making it difficult for foreigners to compete, much like the wine industry before it.
The laws would clearly define descriptions of Scotch whisky like single malt, and also the different geographical territories associated with a whisky like Highlands or Islay. The law hopes to prevent the sale of any “Highlands” whisky that’s actually been produced in Hyderabad, for example.
