Passengers traveling Thursday on a Qantas flight from Cairns to Port Moresby were surprised mid-flight when a 3-meter-long Amethystine Python was discovered on their plane.
Luckily for those aboard the aircraft, the snake was on the exterior of the plane, hitching a ride on one of the wings. Unluckily for the python, the conditions of flight — freezing outdoor temperatures, wind speed, and moving airplane parts — made it impossible for the snake to survive the journey, and the critter’s remains were removed and quarantined once the flight landed at its destination.
So let this be a lesson to all the young snakes out there — hitchhiking can be deadly!
