In Serbian history it seems, both the shaman and reindeer were known to eat the Amanita muscaria, otherwise known as magic mushrooms. The evidence of a misguided Christmas story doesn’t end there, either. The shaman were known to dress like the mushrooms they would ingest, in red outfits with white accents. It wasn’t until 1822 in New York City when Clement Clarke Moore wrote “The Night Before Christmas” that the shaman of yore was disguised as our Kris Kringle.
