Paris’ most famous landmark may receive an extension as part of its 120th birthday celebrations. A Paris-based architectural firm has won a contest to redesign the tower’s public access areas. The firm, Serero’s, winning design features an extension of the top floors of the tower, without the need for any permanent structural changes to the landmark.
According to Serero, the extension will be made to the top floor plate of the tower by bolting the structure to it temporarily. The extension will expand the floor areas to 580 square meters from the existing 280 square meters.
Among all tourist destinations, the Eiffel Tower receives one of the highest numbers of annual visitors in the world. Every year more than 6 million tourists wait anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour for a turn to ride the elevator to the top floors.
