A driver from Ontario, Canada wrote a letter of thanks to the Barrie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, thanking them for giving him a traffic ticket. This isn’t a case of Canadian politeness taken to new extremes, but rather a sobering story in which the motorist credits the traffic stop for saving his life.
The man had done his usual practice of rolling through a specific intersection when he was stopped and ticketed by Constable Gardiner. The following week, mindful of the reprimand he received for not heeding the stop sign, he came to a complete stop at the intersection. A moment later a vehicle driven by a distracted driver using a cell phone failed to stop at the stop sign and barrelled through the intersection. The letter writer, who has not been named, believes he would have been killed if he had continued his prior bad habit and not come to a full stop.
