The ruined and partially submerged roller coaster became an emblem of the devastation Superstorm Sandy caused in New Jersey. The Jet Star was a favourite amusement among seaside holidaymakers for generations, but the pier it stood upon could not withstand the extreme weather unleashed upon it during last year’s ferocious storm.
After months of dispute between the owner and insurers, and a logistical quandary over exactly how to demolish a roller coaster in the ocean. In the end they’ve chosen to use a barge equipped with a giant claw that will reach down and grab bits of the ride and retrieve them to the deck of the barge. The demolition work began on Tuesday and is expected to take about 72 hours, weather permitting.
