Ninety-five percent of the world’s bourbon is distilled in Kentucky and last year alone the industry generated 4.5 billion dollars in retail sales. Business is booming and production is on the rise, as are distillery visits. While the “Big Six” distillers account for 90% of the world’s bourbon, small family-owned operations are growing rapidly and attracting tourists.
Think of it as the bourbon lover’s wine tasting. The local law only allows for two tastings per distillery, however, so you’ll have to make a few trips in order to try all 200 types offered in places like Bluegrass Tavern. Other distilleries are recommended for their breath-taking views, bourbon-themed baked goods or historical appeal.
If bourbon is your poison of choice, we suggest you make a trip to the upcoming Kentucky Bourbon Festival, September 17-22 in Bardstown, or read Susan Reigler’s Kentucky Bourbon Country: The Essential Travel Guide.
