It is now legal to masturbate in public in Sweden as long as the act is not directed toward anyone. The precedent was set when the court ruled that a man who masturbated at a beach was not guilt of sexual assault and his actions were not criminal.
Legal and socially acceptable are two different matters however, and the verdict has incited a great deal of discussion and controversy around whether public masturbation will become commonplace in the wake of this decision.
