As a long time Florida native, The Sunshine State has always held a special place in my heart. It’s hot, brash, bold and a little bit nuts. What’s not to love?

Although I moved away some twenty years ago, there’s a part of me that still connects with it on a visceral level. And so I go back a few times every year. On my latest trip — this time with Mrs. Vagabondish in tow — we toured South Florida, including a first time visit to Deerfield Beach. While in town, we checked out the Comfort Inn Oceanside – a budget hotel just a short walk from one of the area’s most beautiful beaches.
The Traveler’s Take
The Room + Amenities
We found our room to be spacious, though not huge, with plenty of room for the two of us to spread out. The in-room coffeemaker, sink and mini fridge were all nice touches that families will appreciate. For budget travelers in particular, this means being able to prepare some of your own meals in-room while on vacation.
Our oceanview was a bit obstructed by way of a series of neighborhood trees but, given the price point here, we weren’t disappointed. With a wide, east facing view, we were still able to take in the spectacular South Florida sunrises!
Other amenities include a heated outdoor pool (with waterslide!), a small pool bar, fitness room, continental breakfast every morning, fancy Truly Yours bedding, free Wi-Fi and free local phone calls. Plus, there’s an onsite Subway restaurant and Häagen Dazs Ice Cream shop at the hotel.
The Location
While it’s not technically oceanfront, it is oceanview. That means it’s within easy walking distance of Deerfield’s famous International Fishing Pier. This almost 1000-foot long pier is among the best in South Florida for (wait for it …) fantastic fishing. In addition to renting fishing rods, the pier concession stocks live, fresh and frozen bait, tackle, fishing accessories, ice and t-shirts.
The hotel is also within walking (or a short drive’s) distance of the area’s best beachfront and other attractions, including: Mizner Park, Greater Fort Lauderdale-Broward County Convention Center, Festival Flea Market Mall, Deer Creek Country Club and Pompano Beach. Bottom line: the real get here is the location, location, location.
Pricing
A quick check of ComfortInn.com reveals online rates starting at less than $100 (USD) nightly. What’s more is that Choice Hotels is offering an Earn One Night Free promotion where guests can take two separate trips and earn one night free at over 1,500 Hotels.
The Bottom Line
All and all, the room was what we would expect from a three-star hotel in a popular beach community. For those traveling on a budget, the Comfort Inn Oceanside offers a friendly staff, an ocean view, great location and just the right amount of amenities.
