Imagine for a second that you’re you’re an archaeologist. You arrive back at your dig site one morning only to discover that it is gone, destroyed. This is what scientists in Guangzhou, China faced this weekend when they returned to continue excavating the 3,000-year-old tombs they had been studying.
The historically protected tombs from the Shang Dynasty were demolished by mistake by workers contructing a new subway line. At least construction officials claim it was an accident. It sounds as though the archaeologists may have other theories, as this is only the latest in a series of mishaps that have resulted in the demolition of historically significant sites during Guangzhou’s rapid development.
