A Virgin Australia flight returned to the airport after a “bad odour” was detected on board. The aircraft was 10 minutes into its flight from Melbourne to Sydney when it was forced to return to Tullamarine airport after the crew noticed a strange smell in the cabin. The plane made an emergency landing in Melbourne without incident.
The nature or source of the odour has not been revealed, other than that it did not originate in the cockpit. Aviation authorities are investigating the aircraft to determine its airworthiness before it is put back into service.
The timing of this incident, combined with the swift denials from the flight crew that the odour emanated from the cockpit, has led me to develop my own theory on what the funny smell might have been.
