A 9,000-strong Emperor Penguin colony has been discovered in Antarctica, thanks to the help of satellite imagery. Images taken from space in 2009 led scientists to theorize about the existence of the colony that was unknown to science.
Scientists from the International Polar Foundation set out from a nearby research base to reach the colony in December. They expected to find penguins, but the size of the colony was astonishing. The penguins, who hang out near the Princess Ragnhild Coast for months during their breeding season, had never encountered humans before the scientists from Belgium and Switzerland turned up.
