Villagers are distraught following the death of the Guinness-certified record-holder for the world’s largest saltwater crocodile in captivity. The reptile had become the primary claim to fame and tourist draw for the small town of Bunawan in the Philippines.
The late croc weighed at least one ton, and measured 20.24 feet long. It had been blamed for several deadly attacks in the wild before finally being captured in 2011 and put on display at a purpose-built eco-park. Locals have grown so attached to the creature, which they named Lolong, that they plan to have his body taxidermied so that they, and tourists, can continue to visit him.
