However, if you work hard and use these five tips, you will be able to pick up a new language and use it effectively to carry on at least a simple conversation with native speakers.

Sign Up for a Class

If you are choosing a major world language, such as Spanish, Chinese or French, you should be able to find a local class that can help. Check community colleges and other smaller educational programs for a list of courses. Many of these places offer short courses that will give you a good starting point for learning the language. Once you get started, it is easier to continue on your own.

Make Flash Cards

Repetition is one of the most common methods through which individuals can learn. When you are learning vocabulary words in the foreign language, create flash cards using index cards so you can quiz yourself. Instead of reading a book when you are bored or playing games, try using flash cards to memorize these words. The more often you use the flash cards, the easier the words will come to you when you need them.

Change Your Thinking

Most people have thoughts throughout the day to help them remember things, such as items they need from the grocery store or an errand they have to run after work. As you work on learning a foreign language, it can be useful to change the way you think. Force yourself to translate your thoughts into your new language so you can further cement the vocabulary in your head. Don’t worry if you make mistakes! Learning a new language can be quite challenging and it will take time to fully grasp.

Talk Out Loud

It’s often easier for individuals to think in a foreign language than it is to actually speak it. Teaching your mouth to form the words is an important part of the process, especially if you will use it for travels or business. Whether you are by yourself or among other people, don’t be afraid to talk out loud. Even if you make mistakes with your pronunciations, you can use it as a learning process.

Watch TV

Finding television shows in the language you are learning can be a great way to immerse yourself. In fact, this is a common way for immigrants to America to learn to speak English. If you can’t find shows on a channel you receive, try renting videos or checking online. The more you hear someone natively speak the language, the easier it will be for you to pick it up over time. It is also a great way to expand your vocabulary by using context to figure out the meaning of words. It’s normally best to also find a few shows that you like or find easier to understand.

With these tips, you can more easily pick up your new language and feel more confident in your new skills.
