About Vagabondish
Vagabondish is a collaborative blog that discusses offbeat backpacking and travel news, advice, how-to tips and tall tales from around the world.
What We’re Looking for
Our e-mailbox is always open to welcome contributions from folks who are smart, pithy, clever and insanely passionate about travel and backpacking. A good sense of humor and humility certainly don’t hurt either.
What’s in It for Me?
Fame
Perhaps fame is a bit hyperbolic. Let’s say exposure. You’ll be posting your work in front of an audience of over 200,000 monthly readers from around the world.
You’re also welcome to promote any online or offline cause, non-profit organization, website, etc. you wish via an author’s byline listed in every story you post. Please see Ben’s byline at the bottom of this post for an example.
Fortune
Unfortunately we are not currently offering paid positions.
However, in an effort to give back to our hard-working contributors we are test-driving a revenue sharing program. If you have a Google AdSense account, you’re already eligible to start earning with us! Simply provide us with your AdSense publisher ID number and you’ll immediately begin earning 50% of all AdSense revenue generated by every one of your future posts.
Glory
Many of our contributors are simply happy and proud to share their ideas with such a great community of travelers.
Content
We feature three main types of content. You’re welcome to contribute to any or all of these sections:
Features
- Timeless, cornerstone pieces (how-to tips, social commentary relevant to travel, better ways to do [x], etc.)
- Topics relevant to backpackers and budget travelers, which could include:
- Backpacking
- Social and cultural issues
- Environmental causes and issues
- Travel gear, gadgets and technology
- Photography
- Each post is approximately 1,000 words, though this is only a guideline
- Not your standard, glossy travel publication fare
- This section does not include topical, news-related or narrative pieces
- Examples include:
News + Sidelines
- Content: news pieces or other brief posts related to travel, backpacking, interesting cultural phenomena, photography, social awareness, environmental issues, etc.
- Length: 200-300 words (just a guideline)
- For examples, visit the News and Sidelines sections
Dispatches
- Content: any travel narrative focused on a unique aspect of a particular place
- Length: entirely up to the author and whatever s/he feels is appropriate
- Visit the Dispatches section for examples
Editing
Most contributions will see some minor editing - not for content, but mainly for flow, length, etc.
How Do I Get Started?
If interested, please contact Mike with your name, contact info, a bit about you and why you feel you’d be a good fit, and to which of the three sections above you’d be interested in contributing. Any links or attachments to any recent travel writing you’ve done would certainly be helpful.
Please note that how much you contribute is entirely up to you. Even if it’s only one post a month, we’d still love to hear from you!
Cheers,
-Mike Richard, Editor
